In 2019, Taylor became a permanent Attorney Advisor in the Philadelphia Immigration Court, working closely with the immigration judges assisting in writing decisions on many different applications for relief from removal, including asylum. In October 2022, she made the switch to private practice and began working at Global Immigration Legal Team in Wayne, PA. Handling a wide variety of immigration cases, including business, family-based, and removal defense, but most of her work focuses on removal defense and family-based immigration applications.

Please join the Abington Township Human Relations Commission (HRC) for the 38th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Service Award Program and Day of Service on Monday, January 16 beginning at 10 AM.
Service Project: The HRC will be collecting non-perishable food donations for local pantries and books for school age children that celebrate diversity and promote understanding and inclusion. All donations can be dropped off at the Abington Township Building lobby in advance or brought on the day of the event.

Israeli Nobel Prize Winners In 1895, Alfred Nobel signed his Last Will and Testament which shared a large part of his fortune with a series of prizes in physics, chemistry, medicine, literature, and peace. The first Nobel Prize was awarded in 1901. In Israel’s 75 years, twelve Israelis have received a Nobel Prize.
Six prizes in chemistry - the second highest number of Nobel prizes in chemistry in the past twenty years (along with Japan); two in Economics; one in Literature; three peace prizes; and six in chemistry.
1966 - First prize was awarded to Shai Agnon for Literature. He was a prolific writer born in Eastern Europe. He wrote in Hebrew and Yiddish. 1978 - Menachem Begin was awarded the Nobel Prize for Peace along with Anwar Sadat for the Camp David Accords which detailed peace between Israel and Egypt. This agreement is still functioning today. 1994 - Yitzhak Rabin, Shimon Perez, and Yasser Arafat were awarded the Nobel Prize for Peace for the Oslo Accords. It is well known that they did not like each other. 2002 - Daniel Kahneman received the Nobel Prize for Science. He was an economist and studied how intuition affects how we make decisions. 2004 - Avram Hershko and Aaron Ciechanover received the Nobel Prize for Peace with their American colleague. They discovered how proteins and cells are broken down. Their conclusions are still used today in the study of, and creation of cancer treatments. 2005 - Robert Aumann, an economist, received the Nobel Prize for Game Theory which can be applied to how people work together to complete projects and tasks. 2009 - Ada Yonath received the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for studying how cells create proteins. She is the only woman in Israel and one of five women in the world to receive the Nobel Prize for Chemistry. 2011 - Dan Schechtman received the Nobel Prize for Chemistry for his discovery of quasicrystals. 2013 - Michael Levitt and Arieh Warshel received the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for the creation of a computer program in the 1970s that allowed scientists to simulate chemical reactions.

I hope you all had a Happy Hanukkah and a Happy New Year. I write to you today with difficult news. Recently, I mentioned in the letter that accompanied your statement that Beth Am had a significant budget shortfall. One of the unfortunate decisions that we, as an Executive Committee needed to make, was whether to renew Rabbi Tornberg’s contract for an additional term. Her contract is set to expire on June 30, 2023 and per the terms of the contract, we were required to inform her of the board’s intent by November 1.
Our professional and lay leadership team have worked to maintain an appropriate and sustainable financial structure for Old York Road Temple - Beth Am. Beth Am’s current membership census is now such that our current professional staff size is unsustainable. With a duty to fiscal responsibility, the Executive Committee has reluctantly decided not to renew Rabbi Tornberg’s contract. It is with heavy hearts that we pass on this news. This decision came down purely to finances. While it is true that our congregation is below the URJ threshold recommending two rabbis, we would have retained Rabbi Tornberg had the funds been present.
Similarly, Rabbi Tornberg is cognizant and deeply respectful of the synagogue’s responsibility to make difficult choices for the health of the congregation. She and her family are grateful for her warm and flourishing tenure as part of the Beth Am community and its leadership team.
Rabbi Tornberg has served our Old York Road Temple - Beth Am family wonderfully over the past five plus years, since joining us in 2017. Beth Am’s children are thriving in the Mensch Lab and Beit Noar. Our community has been enlightened by her sermons from the bimah, grown from her learning with adults, and been comforted by her pastoral work.
As we approach the spring, make sure to save the date in your calendar to celebrate Rabbi Tornberg on Friday, May 5, 2023 during our annual Education Shabbat. We value the contribution that Rabbi Tornberg has made to our Beth Am community and the tremendous positive impact that she has had on our children.
Going forward, Beth Am, with Rabbi Tornberg’s assistance and collaboration, will be looking to hire a part-time educator to run the Mensch Lab and Beit Noar. Our search for this new educator will begin promptly after the New Year to allow time to hire, acclimate, and properly transition to a new school administration. Rabbi Leib and Cantor Zarkh will continue to serve the pulpit, pastoral, holiday, programming, and lifecycle needs of our congregation.
We know many of you probably have questions. Please feel free to contact either of us or the office with any questions or concerns you may have. Rabbi Tornberg will be with us through June 30 and there will be plenty of opportunities to spend time with her and continue to learn with her.

HIAS - Giving help and hope this holiday season! Seven years ago, the Hebrew Immigration Aid Society (HIAS) introduced our congregation to a family living in Lansdale who needed assistance. The single mother is diabetic, has suffered two debilitating strokes, and is unable to work. The older daughter is employed as a factory worker earning slightly more than minimum wage. All her income is devoted to support of the family.
For those who would like to join in helping this family, donations can be made to Rabbi Leib’s Discretionary Fund, with the notation “HIAS Family”. Rabbi will distribute accumulated funds to pay for some of the family’s expenses of medicine, clothing, utility bills and auto repairs when they can’t make ends meet. I look back on this past (secular) year and remain ever grateful for and humbled by the many ways in which I might have been of service to you. These bonds of pastoral connection and warm collegiality are precious to me, and I don’t take them (or you, for that matter!) for granted.
I can only hope that in whatever capacity our paths have crossed - no matter how frequently or infrequently, no matter whether in person or online – that I discharged my obligations in a timely, respectful and scrupulous manner commensurate with the noble profession to which I’m privileged to belong.
That profession – the “rabbinate” – is an ever demanding and relentless one! However, it also recognizes the need for rabbis to enjoy, every seven years, a short sabbath-of-the-soul otherwise more universally known as a “sabbatical!”
That time has come, for me, and I couldn’t be more grateful for the rare opportunity (yes; I know all too well that some of you will find this very difficult to believe!!) to disengage altogether from the routine of congregational life: no services or sermons, no lifecycle events or classes, no meetings or visits, no calls, no emails, no texts, no voicemail messages! And, yes, no Zoom or livestream appearances, either!
With the blessing of our lay leadership, I’ll be away for three months from January 12 - March 12, May 1 - 14 and June 1 - 14. Please be assured that throughout this period of time, both Rabbi Tornberg and Cantor Zarkh will be on duty. I remain ever indebted to them both, to our Executive Director, Sherrie Turetsky, and to our administrative staff for their wholehearted support.
Finally, my very special thanks to all of you, my fellow Beth Amniks, for respecting my privacy while I’m away and enabling me, together with those I love, to enjoy a time for regrouping, rest and replenishment.

HIAS - Giving help and hope this holiday season! Seven years ago, the Hebrew Immigration Aid Society (HIAS) introduced our congregation to a family living in Lansdale who needed assistance. The single mother is diabetic, has suffered two debilitating strokes, and is unable to work. The older daughter is employed as a factory worker earning slightly more than minimum wage. All her income is devoted to support of the family.
For those who would like to join in helping this family, donations can be made to Rabbi Leib’s Discretionary Fund, with the notation “HIAS Family”. Rabbi will distribute accumulated funds to pay for some of the family’s expenses of medicine, clothing, utility bills and auto repairs when they can’t make ends meet. Family Spotlight: Rachel and Adam Schupack & Family
Rachel and Adam are event hosts at this year's JRA Annual Event to End Hunger. Rachel and Adam first volunteered at JRA back in 2014. They introduced their two young children to the mitzvah of JRA before they could even walk! Nowadays, the family volunteers by packing food during our JRA Juniors program, whizzing down the assembly lines, and delivering boxes to families in need. The Schupacks are committed to instilling Jewish values in their children, teaching kindness, active citizenship, and generosity. __________________________________________________

Spotlight Recipe from our Congregational Cookbook Zucchini Bread by Evey Palat
Ingredients:
3 cups all purpose flour
1 tsp. salt
1 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. baking powder
1 tbsp. ground cinnamon
3 eggs
1 cup vegetable oil
2 1/4 cups white sugar
3 tsp. vanilla extract
2 cups grated zucchini
1 cup chopped walnuts (optional)
Directions: Grease and flour two 4x8-inch loaf pans. Preheat oven to 325 degrees F. Sift flour, salt, baking powder, baking soda and cinnamon together in a bowl. Beat eggs, oil, sugar, and vanilla together in a bowl. Add sifted ingredients to the creamed mixture and beat well. Stir in zucchini and nuts until well combined. Pour batter into prepared pans. Bake for 40-60 minutes, or until tester inserted in the center comes out clean. Cool in pan on rack for 20 minutes. Remove bread from pan and completely cool.

Our Mitzvah Project:
Our Mitzvah Project was to help raise awareness, to donate wish list items and to raise funds for one of our favorite places, CAMP HARLAM!
Camp Harlam is truly our home away from home. We have been attending overnight camp in Kunkletown, PA for the past few summers, and it has molded each of us into who we are today. We have gained lifelong friendships, strong Jewish values and confidence.
We love Camp Harlam so much that we wanted to support them for our Mitzvah Project. We worked with the staff to curate a special list of necessities to enhance camper and staff experiences. Throughout each summer, "Camper Free Choice" is offered, where campers have the opportunity to choose their own schedule for a day. Everyone gets the opportunity to try new activities and also revisit old favorites.
We created an Amazon Wish List and had these items delivered to our home. We then sorted and categorized all of these items and worked with the Camp Harlam staff to coordinate pick-up and drop-off of the wish list donations. It was so heartwarming to see our fellow campers enjoying themselves this summer with our Mitzvah Projects donations.

We would like to thank each one of you for attending our service and supporting us on our special day. We would also like to thank our Camp Harlam tutors for helping us prepare, study, and practice our Torah portions even at overnight camp.
We would also like to show gratitude towards all of our Mensch Lab Teachers we've had over the years at Beth Am. They have helped us learn Jewish values and prepare us for this big day. We are extremely grateful to the clergy, including Rabbi Tornberg for helping us write this D’var Torah, Rabbi Leib for guiding this beautiful service today, and especially to Cantor Zarkh. Cantor has been helping us prepare for this big day for a long period of time. She has also been such a positive help in this experience. _________________________________________________
I would like to thank Sydnie. If you didn’t already know Sydnie is my “cool” older sister. She has been such an amazing help to me. She helped me study, prepare, and get ready for this day. I don’t know what I would do without her. She is caring, kind, very helpful, outgoing, and is crazy in a good way. She inspires me to do my best every day, thanks Syd.

I would also like to thank my sister Ani. She has been such a great help in studying for our B’not Mitzvah. I really appreciate her and would do anything for her. I'm so proud of her and everything she has accomplished in this short period of time. I love her so much, and she means the world to me.
We've saved the most special thank you for last. This one goes out to our amazing parents, Jaime and Jeff Zucker. They have been super supportive throughout this whole process. They have supported us by making us study until we learned every single prayer and pushed us to our limits for this day. We are so grateful to have them as Jewish role models in our lives. We don't know what we would do without them. From all of the Hebrew lessons they drove us to, to all of the religious holidays they have hosted, to all of the party prep and for guiding us through the journey to becoming young Jewish adults. We love them to the moon and back and can't picture a more fun, crazy, and adventurous life than the one we have with them.

After a long summer hiatus, it’s time once again to resume our Aleph-Bet journey! We successfully undertook a deep, Kabbalistic investigation of the first 10 of the 26 letters in the Hebrew alphabet. Tonight, we resume with the 11th letter, the “KAF.”

Spotlight Recipe from our Congregational Cookbook Chocolate Chip Chiffon Cake by Evelyn Fair
Ingredients:
4 oz. unsweetened chocolate, grated, but not too finely
2 1/4 cups flour
1 1/2 cups sugar
3 tsp baking powder
1 tsp salt
7 - 8 eggs, separated, enough to produce 1 cup egg whites
1/2 cup vegetable oil
egg yolks (from above)
3/4 cup cold water
2 tsp vanilla
1/2 tsp cream of tartar (for beating the egg whites)
Directions: Mix the flour, sugar, baking powder and salt. Make a well and add in order the oil, egg yolks, water and vanilla and mix with a mixer until smooth. Beat the egg whites in another bowl with the cream of tartar until very stiff. Fold into the first mixture along with the grated chocolate. Pour into a large tube pan. Bake at 325 for 55 minutes. Then bake at 350 for 10 - 15 minutes. Remove pan from oven and hang upside down until cake is completely cool. Cake may be served as is or make a chocolate glaze, spread on top and let it run down the sides.
Chef note: My mother, Goldie Kurtzman Fair, was known for making this cake. I have no idea where she got the recipe and I've never known of anyone else who has made it. _________________________________________________
