Have you ever wondered what it means to stand at Sinai? This is arguably one of the most important questions – and challenges – of our day. For if not, it means that we are perpetually bound to Egypt. Having undertaken our long, 7-week journey from Pesach to Shavuot, from the enslavement of Egypt to the sovereignty of Sinai, we invite you to join with us as we stand, once more, at Sinai’s foot ready, willing, and able to renew the ancient covenantal promise. Together, as one community of faith, we’ll renew that ageless vow around the Torah table, and hear the stirring, majestic words of Exodus 20, the Ten Commandments. In addition, we’ll celebrate the “confirmation” of Eliana Rubin, daughter of Jody and Bruce Rubin, as she pledges her devotion to a life of Torah. Our Shavuot service will, of course, include the full recitation of Yizkor. An unforgettable and joyous celebration of Torah to be followed by a delicious, dairy reception!

Zach Anderson, who became a Bar Mitzvah at Old York Road Temple-Beth Am in 2014, has created and produced document, ANTISEMITISM: HERE ON OUR CAMPUS that was just released on YouTube. Zach will graduate this weekend from Boston University with a dual degree in Economics and Psychology. Zach, the son of Penny & Paul Anderson, was a four-year student manager of BU’s men’s basketball team and president of his fraternity, Sigma Chi.
This is a very professional video that explores antisemitism not just on college campuses, but in contemporary America from both the right and left extremes of the political spectrum. There is some “adult language,” but the real obscenity is the antisemitism on display in the video. You can view Zach’s videohere.

Yesterday, we shared information in preparation for a vote of the significant revision to our congregational by-laws. While we stand by the product and the changes from the 2014 version, some of you may have inadvertently misconstrued that the elimination of our Vice President of Education position was in reaction to or due to the actions of any specific person. That is absolutely not the case and the change was made to streamline the relationship and work environment between the board, the professional staff and school staff. We are thankful to Jamie Lincow for her dedication, hard work, and countless hours spent for the sake of Old York Road Temple - Beth Am. Jamie is a consummate professional in her field and her work as Vice President of Education will always be appreciated. We apologize if anything else was taken out of context from our statement.

As you may be aware, we have been working on a significant revision to our congregational bylaws. The last update to our current bylaws was in 2014. That version was sorely in need of updating. I’m writing to you today with a list of some of the changes we’ve made. I’ll also be attaching copies of both the 2014 version and the new proposed version, as well as a summary of the proposed update. You’ll see that the new bylaws are easier to read and understand. You won’t need a law degree. We’ve also brought the proposed version in line with current URJ guidelines and trends in URJ congregations. The 2014 version was redundant in places and contradictory to itself in others. We’ve fixed that. We’ve eliminated both the Financial Secretary position and the Vice President of Education from the Executive Board, while adding a Recording Secretary. The name of the Executive Board is also changing to Executive Committee. These changes are consistent with the vast majority of other URJ congregations. The job of financial secretary has been assumed by our office staff who have been doing an amazing job. As for Vice President of Education, the elimination of this position was a common-sense change as well as following trends around other URJ congregations. The position was an impediment to the educational director being able to do their job effectively, as well as being redundant with responsibilities of both our Director of the Preschool and Educational Director. As a replacement, we are establishing a standing Education Committee to effectively support and guide the Educational Director in helping our children flourish. This Education Committee is a completely separate entity from a PTA. Attached to this email, you will also find a proposed description of the Education Committee.
Another change was modifying the rules for who is eligible to vote. We’ve changed the rules to state that each member unit gets 1 vote. Again, this was a common-sense change giving each family an equal say in the happenings here at Old York Road Temple - Beth Am
We’ve reduced the size of the Board of Directors from 30 to 15 members at large, more commensurate with our current congregation size of under 500 units. Our committee has worked diligently on this update since the Fall of 2021. We have experts on the committee who do bylaw work professionally. We feel we’ve put together an exceptional product for the future of Old York Road Temple - Beth Am.
From Monday May 1 through Thursday May 4 at 5 pm, we will be having an open comment period to address any concerns with changes to the bylaws. This will be done via email only and questions must be received by May 4 at 5 pm. Please feel free to email me directly with any questions. At the annual meeting, for the sake of expediency, we will not have discussion, but only a balloted vote of the congregation on the proposed By-Laws as they are presented. The Executive Board and the Board of Directors are recommending ratification and both bodies have already voted in favor of the update.
Thank you all for your time and consideration of this update to our congregational bylaws and helping to ensure the future of Beth Am.
B’Shalom, Joshua Posnan President, Old York Road Temple - Beth Am

It’s my solemn obligation to remind you of our Old York Road Kehillah’s annual Yom HaShoah observance which, this year, takes place at Gratz College this coming Monday, April 17, beginning promptly at 6:15pm. The rabbis and cantors from our area’s synagogues will participate in an abbreviated service to be followed immediately by a special, dramatic presentation by Theater Ariel. Click here to register.
I sincerely hope that you’ll try to join with us in person as we recommit ourselves to perpetuating the memory of the six million righteous brethren of our people whose lives were so mercilessly and savagely taken from them during the Shoah, the Nazi Holocaust.
This is an opportune time to remind you, my fellow Beth Amniks, of a relatively hidden treasure in our midst: the presence of no less than three Czech Holocaust Memorial Scrolls, each part of the fabled collection of more than 1,564 Sifrei Torah, administered by the Memorial Scrolls Trust in London.
We are indeed privileged to be the custodian of such priceless treasures, the smallest of which, the beloved “Svetla Torah,” is now encased as the centerpiece of our stunning 3-D mural in the main lobby. I urge you to visit, if you haven’t yet, this impressive addition to our lobby area when next at Beth Am. In addition, a comprehensive website complete with videos and photos (linked to the Beth Am website) dedicated to the history of each of our three scrolls was recently produced by an outside professional agency.
I’d be remiss if I didn’t thank Carol and Barry Stein, Jane Hurwitz and Bill Patent for their hard work and tireless efforts in making sure that our esteemed collection of scrolls is prominently displayed for all - both in person and online. We are grateful to Mark Braverman for his generous support of this long-awaited project.
The Czech Holocaust Memorial Scrolls website can be accessed here.
Today, we are witnessing an alarming increase in antisemitic rhetoric and behavior in this country. The ADL found that in 2022, antisemitic incidents in America reached their highest levels on record since it started tracking incidents more than 40 years ago: terrorist attacks on synagogues, bricks thrown through windows of Jewish businesses, antisemitic flyers left on the front lawns of Jewish homes, swastikas on cars and cemeteries, antisemitic graffiti and acts in elementary, middle and high schools, Jewish students harassed on college campuses, Jews wearing religious attire beaten and shot on streets, antisemitic theories rampant online, antisemitic tropes treated as honest public debate, celebrities spouting antisemitic hate. The list goes on and on. President Biden stated recently: “These acts are unconscionable and despicable. They carry in them terrifying echoes of the worst chapters in human history. They are a stain on the soul of our nation.”
You can take a stand - and support our efforts - by joining with us this coming Monday night. In addition, we urge you to light your yellow candle (Monday night, Erev Yom HaShoah) which was hand-delivered to you by a wonderful team of dedicated volunteers under the leadership of Rich Wright.
Let us proclaim loudly and resolutely that we will never forget the gross indignities that previous generations of Jews were subjected to. Let a million candles glow against the darkness of their unfinished lives.
Shabbat Shalom, Robert

April 18 - “The Convert” by Stefan Hertmans, David McKay In this dazzling work of historical fiction, the Booker International-longlisted author of War and Turpentine reconstructs the tragic story of a Medieval Christian noblewoman who abandoned her life for the love of a Jewish boy.
The Middle Ages have just begun when Vigdis Adelas, a young woman from a prosperous French family, falls in love with David Todros, a student at the city's yeshiva, and the son of a rabbi. To be together, they must flee their city, Vigdis renouncing a life of privilege and comfort. Pursued by her father's knights and in constant danger of betrayal, the lovers embark on a dangerous journey to the south of France, only to find their brief happiness destroyed by the vicious wave of anti-Semitism that sweeps Europe with the onset of the First Crusade. Stefan Hertmans meticulously retraces Vigdis's epic journey, first across France and then beyond, to Palermo and the Middle East. Blending fact and fiction, and with immense imagination and stylistic ingenuity, he painstakingly imagines her terrible trials, bringing the Middle Ages to life, and illuminating a chaotic world of passion, hate, love, and death.

Last Friday, Rabbi Leib addressed the critical issues roiling Israel politics and society. You can watch here. _____________________________________________________________ In the late 19th century, a Russian emigré to Palestine had the crazy notion that Hebrew should be the spoken and written everyday language for Jews in the Holy Land. You can watch his great-grandson, Dr. Zach Kassuto, tell the story of how Ben-Yehudah almost single-handedly revived the ancient language, spoken by millions in the State of Israel. Watch the recording of Sunday's program, "The Birth of modern Hebrew".

For my Mitzvah Project, I volunteered at Furever Yours Rescue. This is a very small, local nonprofit organization, run out of the owner's home. I took care of cats in the cat room at PetSmart and I was responsible for feeding, cleaning their enclosures, and most importantly, playing with them. Furever Yours is always in need of supplies and money for all the animals they rescue. There is a box for donations at both entrances of the synagogue.
Please consider donating one or more of the following: blankets, towels, bleach, leashes, dog food, puppy pads, dog or cat toys.

Poem #1 The book of Leviticus begins, With laws of sacrifice and sin, The priests are given their command, To offer up their offerings grand.
The burnt, the meal, the peace, the sin, Each has its place, its time to begin, The blood is sprinkled on the wall, The fat is burned, the smoke does call.
The people come to make their plea, To ask for help, to be set free, The priest will listen, hear their cry, And offer up a sacrifice.
So let us learn from this great book, And take a closer, deeper look, At how we live, how we can give, And how we can in peace, all live.
Poem #2 A small aleph in Vayikra, A mystery to all, Why is it there, what does it mean, What is its hidden call?
Some say it's there to teach us, That we should not be proud, That even if we're small and weak, We can still stand out in the crowd.
Others say it's there to show us, That every letter counts, That even if it's small and weak, It still has great amounts.
So let us learn from this small aleph, And take its lesson to heart, That even if we're small and weak, We can still make a great start.

Every year on Passover, we proclaim, "Let all who are hungry come and eat." As we reflect on the past three years, in which millions have suffered and the cracks within our social safety net have been exposed, it is more important than ever to come together and retell our shared story. As we look ahead to a healthier, safer world, we know that too many Americans — nearly 40 million today — still face food insecurity. We have a long road ahead, but your support of MAZON and engagement with our holiday materialsensures that we can end hunger together. Each year, MAZON provides resources to help you and your community highlight the issue of hunger at the Seder table. Whether you plan to join with loved ones virtually or in-person this year, we hope you will engage with our Hunger Seder Haggadah. More specifically, we challenge you to ask yourselves the following Fifth Question:"What lessons from our history should guide our nation’s approach to ending hunger?"

Dean, Karen, and Jenna Staller are insanely proud of their son and brother, Ian K. Staller, a sailor in the US Navy since October 2017! Now stationed at NAS Lemoore in California, he has achieved the rank of Petty Officer Second Class and has received a commendation for his "outstanding performance" while stationed at MCAS Iwakuni, Japan. PO2 Staller has been commended for "consistently demonstrating exemplary professionalism in the performance of his demanding duties. He was instrumental in the completion of [hundreds of] system checks and maintenance actions on eleven F/A-18E aircraft. His efforts led to the safe execution of [thousands of] sorties encompassing [thousands and thousands of] flight hours at a 98 percent sortie completion rate and the expenditure of [hundreds of thousands of] pounds of ordnance in support of fleet operations aboard USS Ronald Reagan. His development of junior sailors led to the qualifications of six plane captains, six release and control team members, and four final checkers. He was critical in [a] 2020 detachment and the first fleet employment of [a new] missile. Petty Officer Staller's professionalism and devotion to duty reflected credit upon himself and were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service."

Mazal Tov to David Lieberman. Last week the PA German Society held their 10th Bierfest, where local breweries and importers showcase German style beers. David served three beers, Little Wooden Beer, a smoked dark lager, Subterranean Rauchbock Blues, a smoked strong lager, and Helles Other Purple, a pale lager conditioned on blueberries. He received an enthusiastic reception to all of the beers and won both People's Choice and Brewer's Choice. For the Brewer's award, he will be brewing one of his beers with My Local Brew Works, which will be served at next year's Bierfest on 2/24/24 and he will also be there serving more of his homebrewed beers.

The Sense of an Ending by Julian Barnes Winner of the 2011 Man Booker Prize
This intense new novel follows a middle-aged man as he contends with a past he has never much thought about until his closest childhood friends return with a vengeance, one of them from the grave, another maddeningly present. Tony Webster thought he’d left all this behind as he built a life for himself, and by now his marriage and family and career have fallen into an amicable divorce and retirement. But he is then presented with a mysterious legacy that obliges him to reconsider a variety of things he thought he’d understood all along, and to revise his estimation of his own nature and place in the world.

Bar Mitzvah - Isadore Eisenstein For my Mitzvah project, I made wooden Mezuzot to be hung on the doorposts of several classrooms at our synagogue. My Mitzvah project ties into my Parasha Terumah because both are about building. In my Parasha, Moses describes what Terumah, or “donations,” people can bring for the construction of the Mikdash or sanctuary. I am delighted that I can use my time and skills for this important contribution to my community. I would not have been able to get to this point without the support of my family, friends, and synagogue. I appreciate everything they have done. First, I’d like to acknowledge Mom and Dad for helping me practice and stay on track, and for all the work they put into getting me to this point. I’d also like to thank Rabbi Tornberg for our thoughtful meetings and helpful comments and Cantor Zarkh for helping me learn my Torah portion and blessings. Thank you to my grandparents, Toby, Bruce, and Karen for always being so supportive. Also, thank you to my sisters, Evie and Mira, who spent many nights listening to me practice. Finally, thanks to all my friends and family for sharing this meaningful milestone with me.

2/21 “Color of Love” - Marra B. Gad CLICK HERE to join us on Zoom. Meeting ID: 857 6176 3848
In this award-winning memoir, a mixed-race Jewish woman recounts her journey from adoption and prejudice to helping the family that once shunned her.
Marra B. Gad’s biological parents were a black man and a white Jewish woman. In 1970, at three days old, she was adopted by a white Jewish family in Chicago. For them, it was love at first sight—but the world was not ready for a family like theirs. In black spaces, Marra was considered “not black enough” and encountered antisemitism. In Jewish spaces, she was mistaken for the help, asked to leave, or worse. She even faced racism within her own family.
Marra’s family cut ties with relatives who refused to accept her—including her once beloved and glamorous Great-Aunt Nette. But after fifteen years of estrangement, Marra discovered that Nette had Alzheimer’s, and that she was the only one able to reunite Nette with her family. Instead of revenge, Marra chose love, and watched as the disease erased her aunt’s racism, making space for a relationship that was never possible before.
The Color of Love explores the idea of yerusha, which means “inheritance” in Yiddish. At turns heart-wrenching and heartwarming, this is a story about what you inherit from your family—identity, disease, melanin, hate, and most powerful of all, love.
