It is with much sadness and regret that we inform you that this year’s 73rd Annual Abington Township Interfaith Thanksgiving Service has been cancelled.
Following a lengthy, recent Zoom meeting that we had with our Ministerium colleagues, it became clear that it would not be feasible to host our annual celebration at Beth Am. Please respect our decision for not sharing, publicly, the reasons for having concluded that it would be best if we, as a congregation, absented ourselves. We take some solace and comfort in knowing that, because of our decision, our Ministerium colleagues have decided not to proceed with a service of their own.
Instead, we invite you, our fellow Beth Amniks, to join us in a festive, celebratory program devoted to peace, thanks and hope on Tuesday, November 21st at 6:00pm. The entire program will take place in the Strick Auditorium. We’ll begin with a hoagie meal and accompanying trimmings and then participate in an interactive program including music, poetry and readings. Please respond to the attached flyer ASAP.
We would appreciate it if you would bring non-perishable canned goods to be donated to the Jenkintown Food Cupboard. Both their Board President and Executive Director will be present. We are proud to be the Cupboard's largest donor.
We wish to assure you, our fellow Beth Amniks, that we remain steadfastly committed to the mission of our Old York Road Ministerium: to actively engage in clergy dialogue and to promote and facilitate interfaith cooperation and programs where and when possible. We thank you all for supporting us in this vitally important work that helps nourish and enrich us.
In friendship, Rabbi Robert Leib Cantor Elena Zarkh

Overnight, our "Stand with Israel" billboard sign was defaced. During an overnight drive-by Abington Police noticed and removed the damaged sign immediately. I was notified at that time by the officers on the scene and the building remained secure. Abington Police have a full report and have viewed our video surveillance footage. They will continue to investigate.
We continue to monitor our cameras, keep all doors locked, and ask our congregants and parents to use the Paxton smart key and pin codes for building access. Abington police will continue to patrol our facility and as a community do not forget our motto "SEE SOMETHING... SAY SOMETHING!"

Ever since the shocking, lingering and deep trauma of October 7th, many of us are trying to educate ourselves as best we can of the latest and arguably most egregious impasse in Israel-Palestinian relations. We’ve accessed major TV networks and social media to make informed choices.
For example, just last week I watched a fascinating Zoom interview facilitated by Jason Holtzman, Director of the Jewish Community Relations Council. His guest was retired IDF Colonel Grisha Yakubovich who provided an incredibly informative, riveting and compelling assessment of the current situation in Israel. Perhaps some of you also saw the interview!
Colonel Yakubovich has very kindly agreed to “return” to our area for an exclusive Zoom appearance for our congregation this Sunday 29th at 3:00pm EST. It will be my honor to interview him and include your questions too.
He concluded his military service in 2016 as the head of the civil department for the Coordination of Government Activities in the Territories (C.O.G.A.T.) and currently serves as a policy and strategy consultant to various international NGO's.
Colonel Yakubovich has more than thirty years of first-hand experience initiating and implementing high level cooperation projects between Israelis and Palestinians in the public and private sectors.
I look forward to having you join me for this special, timely and important program.

You are cordially invited to meet and attend a presentation by Jeffrey Ohrenstein, Chair of the Memorial Scrolls Trust from London on Wednesday, November 8 at 7:15pm.
In recognition of the (almost) 60th anniversary of the arrival of the famed Czech Holocaust Memorial Scrolls from Prague to their new home at Westminster Synagogue in London, Mr. Ohrenstein will personally attend Philadelphia’s celebration the following evening at Congregation Rodeph Shalom in Center City at which we will proudly display our 3 Czech Scrolls!
I had the pleasure of meeting Jeff this summer when he personally guided me through the incredibly impressive permanent museum at Westminster Synagogue. His knowledge of this world famous collection of rescued Holocaust scrolls is extraordinary and it will be an honor to host him at Beth Am - the only Philadelphia synagogue he’ll be visiting other than Rodeph Shalom!
I look forward to having you join us on November 8th and if you’re still interested in joining our delegation at Rodeph Shalom on the 9th please be sure to register via the link below. It will be an unforgettable evening dedicated to a milestone celebration of the Czech Holocaust Memorial Scrolls which now play such an important role in the life of Beth Am!

Congregants who might be interested in serving the congregation as shiva minyan leaders need only a light reading knowledge of Hebrew, along with a caring heart and the desire to perform a mitzvah.

A Special Erev Shabbat Service of Peace & Healing led by Rabbi Leib & Cantor Zarkh with our Volunteer Choir *Molish Sanctuary & Livestream *Please note the change in location and Livestream We will have additional security at tonight's service.
Dear Friends,
This has arguably been the most traumatic, horrifying and difficult week for world Jewry since the founding of the State of Israel over 75 years ago.
We are all in a state of collective grief and shock trying to come to terms with the unconscionable inhumanity, the inexcusable evil wrought by barbaric Hamas terrorists on completely innocent Israeli citizens and the wanton destruction of their property.
Last Saturday October 7th, 2023 - Simchat Torah no less - will invariably go down as a day of infamy in the long history of the Jewish people. A day that saw the massacre, the slaughter, the capture of more Jewish lives - men, women and children - than at any time since the Shoah, the Nazi Holocaust.
We’ve attended hastily-arranged Israel Solidarity rallies and prayer vigils. We’ve been glued to our TV and social media trying to comprehend the incomprehensible.
But now Shabbat is about to descend upon us. A sabbath that we can only hope and pray will be decidedly different to the last.
An opportunity not to rally the troops and vent our fury but a time to gather together, to reflect, to hold one another in the warm, comforting embrace of Sabbath peace.
We invite you to join us and the volunteer choir - and supportive members of our community - in the Molish Sanctuary at 7:00pm tonight for a service dedicated to peace and healing.
AM YISRAEL CHAI!
Shabbat Shalom, Rabbi Robert Leib and Cantor Elena Zarkh

Yesterday, October 6th, marked the beginning of the infamous Yom Kippur War of 1973. Exactly 50 years ago.
This morning we woke up to the horrifying news that Hamas had launched thousands of rockets into Israel and, furthermore, infiltrated the country by land, air and sea.
Once again, literally 50 years to the day, Israel was caught off guard. The results, as of this evening, have been nothing less than catastrophic.
On Shabbat coinciding with the otherwise joyous celebration of Simchat Torah, we met in the TBT Chapel earlier today, our joy clearly diminished by what was unfolding in our beloved State of Israel.
Though we have been left numb and shocked by what has happened this day, we must come together and voice both our care and concern.
We invite you to join with us tomorrow morning, Sunday, October 8 at 10:15am in the Molish Sanctuary to affirm our support for the heroic men and women of TzaHaL, the Israel Defense Forces, and to express our solidarity with all our brothers and sisters in Israel.

As we approach the High Holy Days, we have the opportunity to reflect on the past year and look ahead to the New Year with hope and optimism. This is a chance to renew our commitment to our faith and community and come together in celebration and worship. During this time, we hear in the Binding of Isaac, the response to God’s call, the sacred word “Hineini”.Hineini, “Here I Am.” It symbolizes a commitment to envision the world as it could be and to then act with purpose to make it so.
As we approach 5784, we have many challenges ahead of us. Rising instances of Antisemitism, racism, attacks on LGBTQ rights, the need for more inclusive communities, and support for our neighbors who need food, clothing, and the basic essentials many of us take for granted. Now more than ever we need to build a strong and supportive community to meet the challenges of the world around us.
Presidents of congregations are making their High Holiday Appeals at this time. I’d like to think that our community doesn’t need one day a year to be generous and open our hearts. During this sacred time of prayer and confessional, we will be beating our chests with the words: “Al cheit Shechetanu L’fanecha,” For the act of healing we have done through righteous giving, and for the act of repair we have done by opening our hearts.
Your support will help us to continue to provide wonderful programs, support families in need, and provide inspiring education for our children and to our community. It will enable us to keep our facilities safe, support our staff, and continue to foster friendships that we will treasure forever.
I recently asked the Board of Directors, what does it mean to feel “Engaged at a Synagogue?” The answers ranged from feeling spiritually led by the clergy to the place where lifelong friendships had been created.
Whatever your connection is, I urge you to get involved with one of our committees, meet some new people, and commit yourself to the vital work that is needed. We can only do this with your partnership. Your donation will help ensure that our synagogue remains a vital and vibrant center of Jewish Life for generations to come. L’Shana Tovah Tikateivu!
