BAT MITZVAH - LAUREN SASS
“Given my deep love for the Arts, I had initially hoped to put on a charity performance, but because of the COVID-19 pandemic, I have changed my mitzvah project and will now be collecting gently worn dance shoes and costumes to donate to dance schools across the country. Music, theater, and dance have been such an integral part of my life, that I hope this might help awaken a creative spirit in those who are otherwise less fortunate than me. Performance-based schools have taken such a huge hit during the pandemic and my hope is that this will help in some small way in the rebuilding of their programs.
I am grateful to so many people who have helped me reach this important milestone. First to my family, including my parents, brother, Aaron, and grandparents for always supporting and believing in me. I’d like to thank all of the clergy from Old York Road Temple Beth-Am for their guidance. Thank you to Rabbi Leib for conducting my run-through, to Rabbi Tornberg for assistance with my D’var Torah and Cantor Zarkh for helping me prepare for this special day. A heartfelt thank you also goes to my teacher, Mrs. Iris Spector, for all of her tutelage for my Bat Mitzvah. “ _______________________________________________

Beth Am Book Club "Have You Seen Luis Velez?" by Catherine Byan Hyde Tuesday October 19, 11:00 AM on Zoom Facilitated by Sandy Fryer
Raymond Jaffe feels like he doesn't belong. Not with his mother's new family. Not as a weekend guest with his father and his father's wife. Not at school, where he's an outcast. After his best friend moves away, Raymond has only two real connections: to the feral cat he's tamed and to a blind ninety-two-year-old woman in his building who's introduced herself with a curious question: Have you seen Luis Velez?
Mildred Gutermann, a German Jew who narrowly escaped the Holocaust, has been alone since her caretaker disappeared. She turns to Raymond for help, and as he tries to track Luis down, a deep and unexpected friendship blossoms between the two.

Beth Am Book Club Tuesday, August 17, 11:00 AM on Zoom "On Division," by Goldie Goldbloom Facilitated by Leslie Kraemer
Through one woman's life at a moment of surprising change, the award-winning author Goldie Goldbloom tells a deeply affecting, morally insightful story and offers a rare look inside Brooklyn's Chasidic community.
On Division Avenue, just a block or two up from the East River in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, Surie Eckstein is soon to be a great-grandmother. Her ten children range in age from thirteen to thirty-nine. Her in-laws, postwar immigrants from Romania, live on the first floor of their house. Her daughter Tzila Ruchel lives on the second. She and Yidel, a scribe in such demand that he makes only a few Torah scrolls a year, live on the third. Wed when Surie was sixteen, they have a happy marriage and a full life, and, at the ages of fifty-seven and sixty-two, they are looking forward to some quiet time together.
Into this life of counted blessings comes a surprise. Surie is pregnant. Pregnant at fifty-seven. It is a shock. And at her age, at this stage, it is an aberration, a shift in the proper order of things, and a public display of private life. She feels exposed, ashamed. She is unable to share the news, even with her husband. And so for the first time in her life, she has a secret—a secret that slowly separates her from the community.

Beth Am Book Club Tuesday, July 20, 11:00 AM on Zoom "The Vanishing Half," by Brit Bennett Facilitated by Bonnie Surrey
The Vignes twin sisters will always be identical. But after growing up together in a small, southern black community and running away at age sixteen, it's not just the shape of their daily lives that is different as adults, it's everything: their families, their communities, their racial identities. Looking well beyond issues of race, The Vanishing Half considers the lasting influence of the past as it shapes a person's decisions, desires, and expectations, and explores some of the multiple reasons and realms in which people sometimes feel pulled to live as something other than their origins.

Please continue to contribute canned goods at the back door of Beth Am. Bins for food donations are put out at the back entrance of Beth Am Monday through Friday.
If you are unable to shop for food donations, purchasing a gift card from Beth Am to donate to the Food Cupboard is another option.
In addition to our regular canned food contributions, below is a list of non-expired, regular sized items needed at this time:
Canned corn, peas, green beans and beets (low salt preferred)
Brown rice and whole wheat pasta
Baked beans, 16 oz. cans
Healthy non-sugared cereals
(Canned pastas and soups are fully stocked and not needed at this time). ____________________________________________
