Bring a friend to Beth Am!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
During the summer months prior to the High Holy Days, many members of the community make decisions about affiliating with a synagogue. We welcome your relatives, friends and neighbors to join our Beth Am "family." Please invite them to join with you when attending a Shabbat service or special event! Call Marilyn Webster in the Temple office at 215-886-8000 to request a membership information packet or email Membership Vice President Vicki Freedman at oyrtba.membership@gmail.com.
Upcoming Events and Special Programs ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Tekiah Project Can you spare a couple of hours one morning a week to help students who are at-risk for illiteracy? Our own Tekiah Project Education Task Force is once again working with Philadelphia Reads to bring tutors to Solis-Cohen Elementary School to work one-on-one with these children. The feedback we received from the tutors last year was overwhelmingly positive. They unanimously agreed we should participate in this worthwhile and rewarding program again. This means we have a new opportunity for new tutors to sign up. Participation does require you complete the Philadelphia Reads training program taking place in our own Temple Beth Torah Chapel on Monday, September 20 from 7-9pm. If you are interested, please contact our VP of Social Action, Lisa Wiser at 215-674-0354 or at lisa@ultrasonicmachines.com.
Enjoy playing Mah Jongg on Wednesday evenings at 7:00p.m., for just a $5 contribution to Sisterhood! Contact Gail Stein for information.
Cooking up fun in the Beth Am kitchen! Last year, a dedicated group of volunteers, led by Ross Wilner and Lauren Molish, made delicious Shabbat and holiday dinners for the congregation to share. The response was wonderful, and we look to them again to cook up successful dinners this year. If you would like to join the committee, no experience is necessary! So contact Ross and Lauren at randlcatering@gmail.com or call Ross at 215-837-9196, grab your apron, and let's get cooking together!
One Book, One Jewish Community.... reads "By Fire, By Water" by Mitchell James Kaplan. The city-wide kick-off event takes place at Beth Am on Sunday, October 10. Books are available for $12 in the administrative office.
A Gift Card Program offered through our Ways & Means Committee is a way for you to patronize your favorite stores and restaurants, while your synagogue gets a percentage of every dollar you spend. You can purchase gift cards for others, or to use yourself for your "regular" shopping. There are literally HUNDREDS of merchants who participate in this program! Neiman Marcus has recently joined the program, and donates 12% of each gift card to the synagogue. For example: you write a check or use a credit card to purchase a gift card in the amount of $100. You receive a $100 Neiman Marcus gift card, and Beth Am gets $12! The retailers offer varying percentages as their donation to the synagogue.
We also partner with Restaurant.com. You can buy a restaurant.com gift card for $20, and use it to buy $50 worth of gift certificates for many restaurants in the area and across the country.
To order both Gift Cards and restaurant.com gift cards, go to our website for a full list of participating vendors or contact Renee Carl at slickrocky1@comcast.net or 215-669-2130.
There's an easy way to help make Beth Am a greener community. Our inkjet and laser toner cartridge & cell phone recycling program continues. Please bring your empty cartridges and old cell phones to the designated box in the lobby. Cartridges and cell phones can earn the Temple a few dollars each; others will be recycled. Questions? Call the Administrative office at 215-886-8000.
